Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary

of Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the Czech Republic​

Ambassador Duong Hoai Nam commenced his duty in Prague in March 2024.  He aims to promote: (1) a strong and enduring bond between Vietnam and the Czech Republic with a focus on economic, trade and investment cooperation; (2) Vietnam's soft power through cultural and people-to-people exchange; and (3) the role of the Vietnamese community in Czechia as a bridge for the time-honored friendship and multi-faceted collaboration between the two countries. Elevating the Vietnam-Czech Republic relationship to a new height is also high on his agenda, especially in 2025 when the two countries celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

As Director-General of Department of Translation and Interpretation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) from 2020-2023, Mr. Duong Hoai Nam worked as interpreter for top leaders of Vietnam and accompanied them to numerous bilateral visits and​ important international events.

As Deputy Director-General of the Press and Information Department and Deputy Spokesperson, he was dedicated to advancing public diplomacy by sharing his country's history, traditions, culture, arts, values, policies, and vision through direct communication with foreign diplomats and journalists. 

Mr. Duong Hoai Nam was appointed Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Vietnam in Australia in March 2017 and focused on fostering business partnership and economic cooperation, and building people-to-people ties. During his term of duty, Vietnam and Australia elevated the bilateral relations to Strategic Partnership in March 2018.

Before Australia, Nam served as Deputy Director-General of Department of Multilateral Economic Cooperation (MOFA), and member of the Government's Economic and Trade Negotiation Team between 2010 and 2017. He engaged in negotiations of a number of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) such as the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), the EU-Vietnam FTA, Korea - Vietnam FTA, EFTA - Vietnam FTA, FTA between Vietnam and the Custom Union, including Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, etc.

Between 2004 and 2010, Nam was serving his term of duty as First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations in New York.

He covered the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly and issues relating to America, Europe and the Horn of Africa at the UN Security Council during Vietnam's first term as non-permanent member of the UNSC 2008 - 2009.

Prior to that, Nam worked as America Desk Officer of Department for Western Europe and America Affairs, the CPV External Relations Commission (1994 - 2004). He focused on US foreign policy and the US - Vietnam relations. The key milestones were the normalization of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States in July 1995 and the signing of the US - Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement in 2000.

Nam holds a BA in English from the Hanoi National University and a Master of International Policy and Practice from the George Washington University.
